ERP and Manufacturing

Manufacturing is in many ways where ERP’s heritage lies. Manufacturing is obviously closely tied to inventory, quality, planning and procurement processes, not to mention sales and demand. In some respects it is the glue which ties all of these together in ERP. However, not all ERP’s are made equal and manufacturing has evolved since the early days of MRP. Different ERP’s have different strengths relating to in process manufacturing, discrete manufacturing, traceability, quality management, planning, configure-to-order, make-to-order, lean manufacturing and all of the various process nuances that may be relevant to any given organisation. It is common now for organisations to have operations that have very different manufacturing requirements in different business units. Identifying and implementing the best ERP for a manufacturing organisation is not always as straight forward as one might guess.

CRM and Manufacturing

While ERP is typically more related to the activity of manufacturing, of course manufacturing companies also buy and sell. Depending on scale and position on the supply chain the nature and scope of CRM may be more or less for different manufacturing organisations. Managing relationships with customers, suppliers and other partners (xRM) may drive differing requirements from lead generation through opportunity management, contact management to social analytics.
