The Samaritans chosen for Lumenia Consulting 2021 Charity of the Year
Galway based Lumenia Consulting run a ‘Charity of the Year’ initiative as part of its corporate social responsibility programme and to give something back to the community. Each year employees are given the opportunity to nominate their chosen charity and the selected charity is chosen by employee vote.
The 2021 Lumenia Charity of the Year winner is the Galway Samaritans and have received a donation of €7,500. The Samaritans was nominated by Lumenia employee Gerry Savage. He chose this Charity for the outstanding emotional support they provide 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, to anyone who is in distress, lonely, struggling to cope or feeling suicidal.
Sean Jackson, Managing Director at Lumenia Consulting presented the cheque to Catherine Emerson, Samaritans Galway Branch Director and Margarida MacDonnell, Galway Branch Deputy Director.
Samaritans Galway currently has over 100 volunteers registered, and all activities of the branch are run 100% on a voluntary basis. In addition to the listening service manning the phones (116 123) the volunteers are also involved in a number of other initiatives – outreach to schools / sports clubs and other organisations. Volunteers are also responsible for recruiting and training new volunteers every year and are currently involved in expanding the service to hopefully establish a new branch in Mayo in the coming year. Costs for running the branch are substantial and all funding is raised through the branch’s own fundraising activity. There is no state or similar funding provided and like most charities their main fundraising activities for 2020 and 2021 have been curtailed due to COVID.
